The historic town of Mandi (890 m) is built along the banks of the river Beas. It
has long been an important commercial centre and the sage Mandva is said to have
meditated here. This one time capital of the princely state of Mandi is a fast developing
town that still retains much of its original charm and character.

Today, it is a
district headquarters. Mandi is renowned for its 81 old stone temples and their
enormous range of fine carving, it is often called the 'Varanasi of the Hills'.
The town has remains of old palaces and notable examples of 'colonial' architecture.
The temples of Bhutnath, Trilokinath, Panchvaktra and Shyamakali are among the more
famous ones. The week long international Shivratri fair, Mandi is scheduled to be
held Last Week of February or First week of March

and in this fair the activities
like cultural programmes in the evenings, exhibitions, sports etc. are the major
attractions for the tourists as well as locals.

Places to Visits———-
Tarna Temple — situated on a hill top, its the most famous temple here.
Though renovated, but it stands up to its elegance. There is a park nearby to play
and gives a beautiful view of whole Mandi town. The way is quite steep with lots
of turns and at some places without parapets. So take care while going there …..
Its around 2 k.m. from the market. There is a TV tower and Telephone tower near
it.
Indira Market — The main market, which is situated in the heart of Mandi
town. Consisting of two floors and a very old “Clock Tower” in between with park
surrounding it making it a must go place. In evenings one can watch people roaming
around in the market. Guys and girls can even find dates for themselves …. Ideal
time to visit is around 1800 hrs IST.
How To Approach Mandi:
Rail: The nearest railway station is at Joginder Nagar, Chandigarh and Kalka
by broad gauge train which are connected by regular bus services.
Road: Mandi is approachable by road from Shimla, Chandigarh, Pathankot and
Delhi. There are regular bus services linking it to the other towns like Manali,
Palampur and Dharamshala.
Air:The Nearest Airport at Bhuntar.
